ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • You work closely with the team involved in the ERC project DAEDALOS (https://www.daedalos.ugent.be/) within the Department of Archaeology at Ghent University.
  • Your primary task is to carry out a literature review on the various labour systems in pre-industrial monumental building projects worldwide. In collaboration with the Principal Investigator of the project and other members of the research team specialising in archaeology and geomatics, you will also assess whether specific labour systems have identifiable material, structural, or spatial implications. The aim of your work is to contribute to the project by helping to establish a framework for understanding the relationships between labour systems and built environments.
  • To this end, you will examine cross-cultural studies of architectural production in pre-industrial societies, drawing on both synthetic works and databases, as well as contextual sources (including ethnographic, archaeological, and regional studies).
  • Your expected outputs will include research reports and co-authored publications.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate in cultural anthropology, history, or archaeology obtained max. 6 years ago. (This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma).
  • You are therefore expected to have demonstrated experience in conducting literature reviews in the fields of cultural anthropology, archaeology, or history, alongside a strong ability to undertake comparative and cross-cultural analysis in order to engage with questions of labour mobilisation and the organisation of monumental construction.
  • Given your role within the research team, you will be expected to demonstrate a high degree of scientific independence while contributing to a collaborative research environment.
  • You have demonstrated proficiency in academic writing in English.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 1 year.
  • Your contract will start on 1/10/2026 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1. Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers..
