Fusion Energy & Chemical Energy research

At DIFFER, we are carrying out groundbreaking fundamental research on energy. Our research focuses on two major energy themes: fusion energy as a clean, safe and sustainable energy source and chemical energy.
Our fusion energy research
The worldwide energy transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy requires technology that allows large quantities of clean, sustainable and reliable energy to be generated in compact power stations. Fusion energy could satisfy this demand without the emission of greenhouse gases. Nuclear fusion is the energy source of our sun. At the core of the sun, energy is released when hydrogen atoms react at high temperatures to produce helium. We want to use this safe and clean fusion process on earth as well.
Our chemical energy research
In the realm of chemical energy, DIFFER's research focuses on converting and storing sustainable energy sources in chemical forms. For example hydrogen or CO2-neutral fuels, through processes like water splitting and CO2 reduction. Relevance to our research:
  • Catalytic and electrochemical processes, also including batteries
  • Water splitting, CO2 reduction, and NH3 formation
  • Plasma-assisted conversion

World-class facilities

Operated by a dedicated team of DIFFER experts, we host world class facilities for energy research. DIFFER offers access to its research facilities to other researchers. We help them to design the experiment and operate the equipment. Request beam time and start measuring!
Magnum-PSI
Magnum-PSI is the world’s most powerful linear plasma source. This machine can simulate the conditions to which critical parts in future fusion reactors are exposed. Researchers from all over the world come to Magnum-PSI to study plasma-wall interactions during and after long-term exposure.
Ion Beam Facility
Magnum-PSI is coupled to the Ion Beam Facility, to examine the exposed materials. This facility can be used for ion beam analysis and ion irradiation. This paves the way for in-depth studies of energy materials.
Upgraded Pilot-PSI (UPP)
UPP combines the potentials of a high flux magnetized linear plasma generator with operando ion beam analysis to study the dynamic and steady-state plasma-material interaction during plasma exposure.
Chemical Energy Labs
In our labs we focus on synthesis and design of novel materials and processes. We do that for example by investigating the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity.

Teaming up for society

DIFFER is one of the ten research institutes of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). At DIFFER, physicists, chemists, engineers, technicians and support staff from thirty nationalities team up for a sustainable society. DIFFER plays an active national and international role in bringing together various parties within the energy community. To further develop our energy research, we work together with universities, universities of applied sciences, start-ups, and industry. We believe that only through collaboration we can realize groundbreaking energy solutions for the future.

Since 2015, DIFFER is housed in a new laboratory situated on the campus of the Eindhoven University of Technology. DIFFER regularly has vacancies for scientific, technical and support staff. Students from university (WO), higher professional education (HBO) and intermediate vocational training (MBO) have the opportunity to do an internship or a thesis project at DIFFER.
