PROFILE

The Benaki Museum, founded by Anthony Benakis and donated to the Greek state in 1931, is the oldest museum in Greece operating as a Foundation under Private Law. With a workforce of 180 employees, it has become to date the most active museum organization in Greece, which counts 6 museums and 4 archival departments, a rich Library, over 500.000 objects of art, books, photographs, archives and rare documents; the Museum welcomes over 150.000 visitors per year and offers a wide range of educational and cultural activities for all ages. By virtue of its collections, the Benaki Museum is best described as the museum of Greek Civilization in all its pertinent manifestations. Due to the nature of its additional significant collections of Islamic art and Chinese pottery, among others, the Benaki Museum is unique in bringing Hellenic culture into dialogue with world cultures. The Museum has earned recognition beyond the Greek borders and made collaborations and partnerships with established cultural entities, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, the University of Oxford and Princeton University. Its collections feature in Europeana and Google Art Project, among many other digital platforms.

HISTORY

The new millennium marked the expansion of the Museum and its development into a complex structure:

  • In 2000, the Benaki Museum of Greek Civilization re-opened after 8 years of renovation, exhibiting the evolution of hellenism from prehistory to the first half of the 20th
  • In 2004, the Museum of Islamic Art was inaugurated, featuring a unique collection of world-renowned artifacts.
  • During the same year, the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street opened officially —a multidynamic cultural centre able to host all types of events and temporary exhibitions.
  • In 2005, the son of famous greek sculptor Yannis Pappas donated his father’s Studio to the Museum —an exemplary workshop of sculpture and painting which is open to students and the general public.
  • Another historical building, the Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika Gallery, donated by the artist in 1991, opened its doors in 2012, featuring the artist’s studio and works, and a panorama of the intellectual and artistic oeuvre of Greece, from the 1930s until 1967.
  • Another great donor, British writer Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor bequethed his house in Mani to the Benaki Museum and in October 2011, the property passed to the Museum.
  • In December 2012 the Benaki Museum inaugurated the Mentis manufacture donation – a centre for the presentation of traditional textile techniques
  • Four archival departments —Photographical, Architectural, Historical and Theatrical—, a Library of 130.000 titles and a center for the History of Book, support the research activities of the institution.
