Job description

The Nonlinear Nanophotonics (NLNP) group is looking for several excellent post-docs to assist in the development of next-generation integrated photonic chips for optical clocks, integrated light sources for quantum technology and advanced integrated microwave photonic chips for 6G telecommunications and beyond. These applications will rely on stimulated Brillouin scattering in various waveguide platforms, including but not limited to thin-film lithium niobate. Fabrication of these chips will be done by you in the renowned MESA+ Nanolab or in collaboration with our partners. Your work will include selecting the most appropriate material platform, design the optical functionalities of the photonic integrated circuit, create the mask design and manufacture the photonic chip in the clean room. Subsequently, you will characterize the photonic chip using our advanced and well-equipped laboratory. You will work in an enticing environment comprising over 70 scientists working in photonics.

Your profile

  • Vision and ambitious drive (seeing opportunities and possibilities, showing ambition).
  • Hold a PhD degree in photonics, physics, electronic engineering, or closely related areas, which is apparent from publications in reputable academic journals, presentations in international scientific conferences, and other academic activities.
  • Conduct (fundamental and applied) research within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience with fabrication of photonic and piezoelectric materials (e.g. silicon, silicon nitride, aluminium nitride, lithium niobate).
  • Experience with nonlinear optics, especially stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS).
  • Knowledge of and experience in design, fabrication and characterization of integrated photonics circuits.
  • Experience with one of the following fields: integrated microwave photonics, integrated optical quantum technologies, optical communications or optical clocks.
  • Good communication skills and an excellent command of English.

Our offer

  • An initial full-time position for 2 years.
  • A gross monthly salary, ranging from € 4.241,- and € 5.538,- depending on experience and qualifications, and associated conditions in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU).
  • A holiday allows of 8%, an end-of-your bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme.
  • Access to world-class facilities for photonics and microwave photonics research.
  • Opportunities for collaboration with leading photonics industries in the Netherlands.
  • Excellent mentorship in a collaborative and supportive research environment.
  • Excellent career support and courses for your professional and personal development.
  • A total of 328 leave hours in case of full-time employment with a workweek of 40 hours.
  • Free access to sports facilities on campus.

Information and application

Are you interested in this position? Please send your application via the 'Apply now' button below before June 30, 2026 and should include:

  • A a one-page motivation why you want to apply for this position and to join the group.
  • A detailed CV (resume) with a publication list.
  • Title PhD thesis and DOI if available.
  • An academic transcript of B.Sc. and M.Sc. education.
  • Details and contact of at least two academic referees.

For more information regarding this position, you are welcome to contact David Marpaung, email: [email protected]

Screening will be a part of the procedure.

About the department

The NLNP group, chaired by David Marpaung, is embedded in the Applied Nanophotonics department. This department comprises over 70 scientists working on photonics and related fields, e.g., developing mathematical models for photonic simulations.

About the organisation

The Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) engages some 700 staff members and 2000 students in education and research on the cutting edge of chemical technology, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our fields of application include sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally and is strengthened by the many young researchers working on innovative projects with as doctoral candidates and post-docs. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.
