Department of Computing at the University of Turku is searching for a fixed-term postdoctoral researcher in computational systems biology, focusing on the links between microbiome and cancer. The work can start on August 1, or based on mutual agreement during 2026. The position is fixed-term for 12 months.  

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated computational biologist to join as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the research group team of Prof. Leo Lahti (Department of Computing, University of Turku). The project focuses on microbiome (eco)systems biology in cancer research in close collaboration with Prof. Peter Boström (Department of Urology, Turku University Hospital). 

The position will focus on computational analysis and modeling of links between human microbiome and cancer. The selected candidate will develop and apply data science methods, contribute to data processing, engage in team activities, and actively seek to publish and disseminate research in journals, seminars, and scientific conferences. The candidate will have an opportunity to influence their focus within the project based on earlier experience and skills. We work on a range of topics with a focus on high-throughput omics data integration and analysis in population cohort studies (e.g. metagenomics, metabolomics) aiming at groundbreaking scientific discoveries using high-performance computing environments. The work is linked to international collaboration projects. The work is research-oriented but may include contributions to other research-supporting tasks, such as coordination, writing of grant applications, teaching and supervision.  

Who we are looking for

The position requires earlier track record in computational (life) sciences and English communication skills. 

A suitable candidate has: 

  •     Doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as bioinformatics, ecology, or computational biology 
  •     Ability to conduct high-quality research including scientific writing and a solid publication record  
  •     Relevant background knowledge including proven scientific programming and bioinformatics skills  
  •     Fluency in at least one computational language and in scientific data processing and analysis 
  •     Willingness to learn new and multidisciplinary skills as needed 
  •     Ability to work both independently and in a team, good communication and interpersonal skills  
  •     Fluent English (written and spoken) 

We also appreciate the following:

  •     Experience in systems biology, omic data analysis, or microbiome research  
  •     Experience with R and Linux/Unix 
  •     Experience with high-performance computing, version control, workflow managers, and batch jobs  
  •     Experience from research dissemination in e.g. seminars, conferences, and open data and methods

A person selected for the post of postdoctoral researcher is required to have a doctoral degree and the ability to conduct independent scientific work as well as having the necessary teaching skills.

Salary and trial period

The salaries are determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a postdoctoral researcher (OV5-OV6) the salary will be in the beginning of the employment around 3700 - 4600 euros/month, depending on previous experience and skills. The amount of the salary is defined when the employment contract is prepared. 

A six (6) month trial period applies to the position.
