Professor of Orthodontics

to join us in the Research Unit of Population Health at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu, Finland

Research Unit of Population Health (PopH) at the Faculty of Medicine is a multidisciplinary research and teaching unit that approaches questions related to human health through different disciplines.

About the job

Orthodontics is one of the oldest dental specialties and focuses on the development of the dentition and occlusion and facial growth. Orthodontics is dedicated on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental malocclusions and facial anomalies and syndromes.

As a professor you will conduct high-quality research and supervise doctoral researchers. Your responsibilities include research-based teaching in undergraduate and specialized dental education in orthodontics. You will also act as a responsible person in specialized education in Orthodontics

The position holder has the opportunity to hold a secondary clinical position in the North Ostrobothnia welfare region, as separately agreed.

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • Doctoral degree in relevant field
  • Specialist degree in Orthodontics
  • High level of scientific qualification
  • Experience in conducting scientific research
  • Ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching
  • Experience in supervising theses
  • International research cooperation
  • Ability to act as an Academic Leader
  • Permission to act as a dentist in Finland
  • Fluent Finnish and English language skills  

We also appreciate

  • Experience of planning and development of undergraduate, postgraduate and specialized dental education
  • Practical familiarization and clinical experience in the field of Orthodontics  
  • Good communication and collaboration skills 

Salary

The position is permanent as of 1.10.2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 8-9 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 5700-6500 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.

    3. A description of oneself as a teacher and an implementer of educational work
    4. Practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching
    5. Description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks)
    6. Professional development as a teacher
    7. Evaluation of teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards, and assessed test lectures)
    8. Plans for future directions of teaching in the discipline concerned
  7. Details regarding acquisition of research funds 
  8. A brief research and action plan 
  9. Contact details of 2–4 persons available for recommendation.
