About the FDEF

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) at the University of Luxembourg offers a unique academic and research environment.
Rooted in Luxembourg but with a European and international outlook,
teaching and research benefit from the proximity of the European institutions, Luxembourg's leading international financial centre and its vibrant business community. Institutional and private sector partnerships, sponsored Chairs and a growing network of international partner universities make the FDEF a dynamic academic hub at the heart of Europe.

Your role

The postdoctoral researcher will be working under the supervision of Professor Stefan Braum. The researcher is working on a third-party funded project funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) on 'Rule of Law Principles - which model for the Global South?' The project focusses on the transition of the People's Republic of Laos into a constitutional state based on the rule of law. The project starts with the assumption that the implementation of rule-of-law principles can only succeed through intercultural dialogue, which is characterised by the mutual recognition of narratives of the legitimation of normative orders.

This leads to the following main tasks for the Postdoctoral researcher:

  • Comprehensive analysis of the genesis of norms in the political model of the Lao People's Republic, especially in the development of the new constitution and new codifications in criminal law
  • Support in developing a deficit profile of the application of law in the Lao judicial system
  • Analysis of the connectivity of rule of law principles to overcome this deficit profile
  • Application of a common constituted foundation of rule of law principles in relevant fields of action of Lao development policy (climate protection, poverty reduction, women's rights, good governance, human rights in criminal proceedings as examples)
  • Support knowledge transfer of rule of law solution approaches and scientific problems to Lao legislators and legal practitioners
  • Scientific guidance for solving economic, environmental, social and cultural problems of the Lao People's Republic through improved legal practice
  • Organisation of related workshops, seminars and conferences
  • Supporting a small team of PhDs related to the project
  • Publication of articles in scientific reviews and contributions to conferences
  • Assisting with teaching activities, one to three hours a week, and contributing to tutoring students

The PostDoc will primarily coordinate and synthesise ongoing research work so that the results can be used in concrete recommendations for action for the legislator in Laos, and not least for the Luxembourg actors involved in humanitarian cooperation.

For more information concerning this position, please contact Prof. Stefan Braum email:
