About the FSTM

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) at the University of Luxembourg contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine.

The Department of Life Sciences and Medicine (DLSM) at the UL integrates basic and translational, biomolecular and computational research to address critical questions in human health and disease with a focus on cancer biology. Next to its research mission, DLSM coordinates all the Bachelor and Master programs in Life Sciences, Medicine and Nursing Sciences, shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Collaborating with top national and international biomedical research institutions, DLSM is at the forefront of expanding health and medicine as a strategic priority for the University. This growth unlocks exciting opportunities to explore cutting-edge trends in biomedical research.

We are looking for excellent candidates in areas such as cell biology, biochemistry, cancer biology, microbiology or physiology to build up a new research group within the department. We welcome applications of aspiring young researchers who bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and a passion for scientific discovery.

Your role

We invite excellent researchers to express their interest in applying with UL-institutional support for high-level national/ EU career development funding:

These funding schemes provide highly competitive five-year grants and are designed to attract and support outstanding researchers to set up their own research groups within a host institution. After successful application to the above-mentioned funding opportunities, employment of the candidates will be at the level of tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor. After 5 years, the evaluation for tenure as Associate/Full Professor will take place at UL, with the aim to secure an unlimited employment contract.

Indicative timeline:

  • Until autumn 2024: Collection of applications
  • Nov 2024 - January 2025: Screening of applications and interviews
  • February - April 2025: Selection of candidates and appropriate funding scheme
  • Summer 2025: Researchers' profiles for high-level grants (FNR-PEARL, FNR-ATTRACT, ERC) must be submitted on UL-internal level (deadline probably in May 2024) and will be subject to revision of the rectorate and the board of governors. Once approved, the applicants can go ahead with preparing the actual submission documents

Application deadlines:

  • Expected ERC-starting (Autumn 2025) / consolidator (Winter 2025/2026) / advanced (Summer 2026) / FNR-Attract/FNR-PEARL (Autumn 2025)

Your profile

  • Candidates must have an outstanding track record in their field of research: e.g., cell biology, cancer research, developmental biology, pharmacology or a related subject area
  • Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and have substantial postdoctoral training with a record of significant research accomplishments suitable to set up and lead an independent research team
  • Candidates must provide an excellent research proposal, which is attractive for collaborations within the department and the faculty as well as with other national or international actors
  • Candidates must contribute to teaching activities in their research area at the level of bachelor, master, and doctoral degree

Language requirements:

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person to be hired must be proficient in English and should have a good knowledge of French and/or German.
