The Europainstitut / Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel is searching for a doctoral candidate in the field of European Global Studies / Global History (under the supervision of Professor Corey Ross), starting on 1 November 2026 (or a start date by prior agreement).

The Europainstitut (https://www.europa.unibas.ch) is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Basel, which examines the historical and contemporary development of Europe from a global perspective and thereby engages with critical questions of our time.
  • Providing support for research in the field of European Global Studies / global history (with an emphasis on environmental history) and the history of Europe in its global context (18th-20th centuries)
  • Doctoral dissertation in the field of history or European Global Studies
  • Helping with the planning and delivery of teaching activities in the field of European Global Studies / global history within the framework of the interdisciplinary Masters Program in European Global Studies.
  • Helping with the planning and delivery of lectures, conferences, public events and excursions.
  • Active engagement with the interdisciplinary activities of the Institute (e.g. presentation of your research at Institute events) as well as with activities related to the academic administration of the Institute.

  • Candidates should have a Masters degree in history with excellent marks and either have begun or intend to begin a doctoral dissertation in the field of global history and/or the history of Europe in global perspective.
  • Applicants with a degree in a related field but with extensive training in history may also be considered.
  • Of particular interest are candidates with an interest in environmental history (broadly defined), the history of empire, the history of knowledge, and/or human-nature relations.
  • You are collegial and open-minded, work well independently, have a talent for organization as well as strong proficiency in German and English (written and spoken).
