The Department of Public Health of the Medical Faculty, University of Basel, Switzerland, has for long been active in health economic evaluation and health services research, with state-of-the-art research, consulting and teaching activities. Concentrated at the European Center of Pharmaceutical Medicine (ECPM) and Health Economics Facility (HEF), these are fully integrated into the Basel Center for Health Economics (BCHE). We cooperate closely with the Faculty of Business and Economics, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, the Basel University Hospitals and Department of Clinical Research, and partners outside the university. We offer a PhD position in health economic evaluation, with a main focus on within-trial cost-effectiveness analysis.
  • Lead a doctoral research project involving the design, analysis and reporting of health economic evaluation studies alongside randomised clinical trials. This will require to either possess or develop skills in economics, clinical epidemiology and medicine.
  • One main pillar will be participation in the European Union-funded EPIC project, aimed at implementing structured palliative care counselling in Intensive Care Unit settings. You will also support and provide health economic analysis for additional trials funded by the SNSF Investigator-initiated Clinical Trials programme and Cancer Research Switzerland.
  • Depending on interests, you will have the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of decision-analytic modelling and/or real world data analysis aiming for causal inference. Some participation in academic teaching is also expected.

  • You hold a master degree in health economics, epidemiology or another relevant discipline.
  • You have already acquired knowledge and some hands-on experience in applied health economics, health economic evaluation or econometrics.
  • Skills and experience in any of the following areas would be an advantage: programming (e.g. in R or Stata); peer-reviewed publication of research results; cost-effectiveness analysis alongside clinical trials; analysis of large, real-world datasets.
  • Working knowledge of at least some of the following fields (if outside your main discipline) would be desirable: economics, health technology assessment, epidemiological methods, biostatistics, medicine.
  • You work responsibly and with enthusiasm. You have organizational talent, appropriate communication skills, are able to work independently and in a group, willing to meet timelines.
  • Your mastery of English is excellent. At least good working knowledge of German would be an asset.

  • A multi-faceted position providing the opportunity to develop your competencies and further your career, in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
  • Participation in the PhD Program Health Sciences of the Medical Faculty and possibility to participate in the SSPH+ Inter-university Graduate Campus.
  • Work in a motivated and dynamic interdisciplinary team, on societally relevant topics.
  • Attractive, flexible working conditions. Salary and terms of employment are according to the rules of the University of Basel.
  • The appointment will be for three to four years, depending on the expected duration of the PhD.
