Your Responsibilities

  • Write and defend a dissertation in the Earth sciences (geodynamics)
  • Develop and conduct independent research projects
  • Develop expertise in numerical modeling of geodynamic, tectonic and landscape evolution processes
  • Present and publish scientific results at (international) conferences, such as EGU General Assembly and AGU Fall Meeting, and in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Participate in the development and international hackathons of open source software such as ASPECT and the Geodynamic World Builder
  • Conduct independent teaching and/or assist with teaching activities (2 weekly hours per semester), potentially including field courses

Your Profile

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in Earth sciences or geosciences or an adjacent subject such as physics.
  • Interest in conducting research in numerical modelling of geodynamic and tectonic processes
  • Knowledge in (geo)physics, computer programming (e.g., C++, python), and/or data analysis
  • Written and spoken fluency in English (German not required)
  • Strong analytical skills, particularly in data analysis and problem solving, time management skills, and ability to work independently
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills, willingness to collaborate within the institute and internationally

We offer an annual gross salary of € 52,007.20 for a fulltime position.

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Graz comprises the disciplines of geology, petrology and geochemistry, hydrogeology as well as paleontology and stratigraphy. We thus cover a broad spectrum of earth science research topics, dealing with"Biodiversity and Evolution","Climate and Environment" and the"Dynamics of the Solid Earth" and offering a holistic understanding of earth system processes.
