Tenure Track Professor of International Law with a Particular Focus on Environmental and Sustainability Dimensions

Job Description

Initially the successful candidate starts as an Assistant Professor with a qualification agreement for a fixed term tenure phase of six years. After successful completion of the qualification goals, the position will be converted into a permanent Associate Professor position.

The professorship will enable the Faculty of Law to strengthen its expertise and international visibility in the field of public international law, with the expectation that it will actively contribute to shaping the international legal framework for environmental protection and sustainability. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and researching the doctrine of public international law with a particular focus on its environmental and sustainability dimensions. Other relevant fields of law and disciplines should also be taken into account and  international cooperation encouraged. 

In addition, active participation in national and international research networks is required. The professorship is further responsible for attracting third-party funds for national and international research projects, as well as for contributing to the field of excellence “Climate Change Graz” and to core university and faculty research areas. The successful candidate is also expected to collaborate in the Faculty’s doctoral programmes, in particular the doctoral programme in “Public Law, Political Science, Comparative Law and European Law”.

Employment Requirements

• Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD) in the field of public international law
• Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career and interruptions in employment due to caring responsibilities)
• Several years of experience as post-doc or in a similar position
• Skills in attracting subject-specific project grants
• Skills in higher education didactics including the use of digital media
• Gender mainstreaming and diversity management skills
• Proof of a postgraduate degree obtained from a foreign institution of higher education in a country other than the one in which the other qualifications were obtained
• Broad grounding (evidenced by academic publications) in general international law and international law doctrine and the ability to connect with other disciplines
• Strong international network in the academic community surrounding public international law and/or connections to international institutions in the field of international law relevant for external funding
• Experience with and willingness to actively participate in the various responsibilities covered by the university’s self-administration
• Relevant international professional experience (e.g. in an international organisation or law firm) preferred
• Very good knowledge of spoken and written English and German; or willingness to acquire good knowledge of spoken and written German within one year of commencing employment

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, aiming for academic excellence and integrity in research and teaching. He/she will have demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively in a responsible manner and inspire colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented context.
