The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 180 work at SLF in Davos.

The Research Unit ‘Snow Avalanches and Prevention’ investigates the formation and dynamics of avalanches, develops warning systems for Alpine natural hazards, and issues the Swiss avalanche bulletin. Its research group ‘Avalanche Formation and Dynamics’ is looking for a

PostDoc in "The Chain Project: Data-Driven Avalanche Prediction from Release to Runout" 80-100% (f/m/d)

Accurately determining when, where, and how avalanches occur, as well as assessing their potential size and impact on critical infrastructure, is essential for effective avalanche forecasting and risk mitigation. To enhance numerical avalanche forecasting and predict both avalanche dimensions and the likelihood of affecting vulnerable infrastructure, you will develop data-driven models based on meteorological, snow cover and avalanche activity data. You will transfer these models to real-world scenarios in collaboration with avalanche warning services. You will also publish your findings in leading international scientific journals and promote their practical applications.

You hold a doctoral degree in Data Science, Geophysics, Physics, or Natural Sciences. We seek candidates with strong programming, machine learning, and data science skills, particularly in managing large datasets and developing algorithms. Knowledge of avalanche dynamics and snowpack modeling is advantageous. Familiarity with mountain environments and the ability to navigate avalanche-prone terrain confidently are beneficial. Additionally, strong oral and written communication skills in English, coupled with excellent organizational abilities, are essential. You should be motivated to work with an interdisciplinary, international team and passionate about translating your research into practical solutions.

Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Betty Sovilla, phone +41 (0)81 4170 263 will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information.

WSL is committed to diversity and inclusion as core values. We actively promote gender equality and foster an open, inclusive work environment.
