The Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Behavioural Sciences, has a PhD candidate vacancy for a fixed-term position in behavioural analysis.

The candidacy period is three years from the start date and the desired start date is 01/12/2025.

The research group, Experimental Studies of Complex Human Behaviour (ESCOHub), has an overarching goal of being a leading research group in the field of research into stimulus control, internationally and nationally. The goal will be achieved by, among other things, conducting experimental studies using robust experimental designs that will increase knowledge of stimulus control and how stimulus relations emerge — such as the variables that are crucial in what is traditionally considered concept formation, memory, attention and networks of meaningful stimuli.

Field of work

The project aims to increase knowledge of complex human behaviour. More specifically, the project focuses on studying various research questions regarding attending behaviour. We will arrange situations where choices must be made through matching-to-sample tasks. Such arrangements include training on conditional discrimination and testing for emergent relations as stimulus equivalence. These tests take place under extinction conditions and will provide information about new stimulus-stimulus relations — relations that are not directly trained. Stimulus equivalence research examines how humans (and animals) react to stimulus classes that consist of completely different stimuli as though they have the same function after the relations between the stimuli has been directly trained. The project will include “eye-tracking” technology to further examine the mechanisms of how these stimulus classes occur when faced with making choices. The project will therefore be characterised both by aspects of basic research and translational research.

Eligibility requirements

  • Master’s degree (120 credits/ECTS) or equivalent
  • Proven expertise in behavioural analysis corresponding to master’s degree level
  • Knowledge of matching-to-sample (MTS method)
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Admission to the PhD programme in Health Sciences is a prerequisite for the position.
