Job description

Sensors play a crucial role in the modern military. They are used to quickly assess threats and estimate the capabilities of opponents. The one who can do this the fastest has a great strategic advantage. In addition, sensors are used to monitor our own systems and predict the residual capacity of our own systems. This is reinforced by the use of increasingly remote-controlled or even autonomous systems. Here we are completely dependent on sensors to determine the status of the systems and for situational awareness.

For this position we are looking for a colleague with extensive experience in education and research in the field of sensors. You have initiated and completed research projects. Furthermore, you have developed and taught education at university level. You have a – preferably international – network that we can use to improve education and set up research projects.

We expect you to take responsibility for a substantial part of our education program. You are driven to provide our colleagues with the most suitable education every time so that they are optimally prepared for their work in the field. You go into the field to map the needs of our colleagues and you use your contacts in the scientific world and industry to map technological changes and to develop research and development proposals. These elements form the basis of proposals that you develop with the professor for adjustments, improvements or additions to our education.

What are you going to do?

As a University (Senior) Lecturer at the Military Technological Sciences (MTW) section of the Faculty of Military Sciences (FMW), you are the technical scientific partner of our officers and civilian colleagues at the Ministry of Defence. You do this by teaching within our bachelor's and master's programmes, and by providing professional training to our colleagues. Some colleagues are doing a PhD programme: you are their coach and supervisor. Technology is developing rapidly, so you are constantly working with partners such as TNO, MARIN, NLR and the Technical Universities to develop knowledge that our colleagues need.

You have a unique position in this: you know the questions that exist in the field and translate them into research and development questions. You help answer these questions and bring the knowledge back into our education and the field. You use knowledge from the field in bachelor's and master's education. Education is our core product, but research and development are necessary to give our colleagues the best possible education.

You will work in a team of high-quality and highly motivated colleagues. Due to recent developments, defense must expand significantly and we are therefore looking to expand on a number of key technologies to meet the demand for additional training and research.

We expect you to take over some of the teaching tasks related to your area of expertise. In addition, you will be assigned tasks in general subjects and project education, where you will supervise groups of students and coordinate one of the major subjects.
Within the capacity group, you will be assigned administrative tasks. Depending on your experience, these can be tasks within one of the education committees, examination committees or - if you have more experience - education boards. You will be assigned coaching tasks as a mentor of groups of students.

Research plays an increasingly important role within our group. We conduct research for and with our defence colleagues. We work together with research and development groups within defence, in collaboration with knowledge institutions such as TNO, NLR and MARIN, and with Dutch universities. The young colleagues are coached and introduced by the more experienced colleagues so that they can build their own research. The more experienced colleagues have their own network and research. We do expect you to increasingly focus your research on issues relevant to defence. You do this in consultation with your professor.
