The Department of Clinical Sciences at Danderyd Hospital (KIDS) brings together education, clinical practice and research in close collaboration. Each year, approximately 900 students complete parts of their undergraduate medical education at KIDS, across a broad spectrum of clinical activities. The department conducts extensive clinical research of high international standard, with around 100 doctoral students, approximately 15 doctoral defenses and around 300 publications annually. The department offers courses within specialist training, continuing professional development and doctoral education.

The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care consists of four surgical wards in surgery/urology, orthopedics, gynecology/obstetrics, day surgery, as well as ENT and dental anesthesia and external operations, the operational area of postoperative care, intensive care unit (ICU), National Respiratory Center (NRC) and sterile technology. The Department has about 450 employees and annually performs approximately 24,000 anesthetics in about 25 operating theaters.

Description of the subject area

Anesthesia and intensive care is a broad clinical and scientific field that encompasses perioperative medicine, emergency care of critically ill patients, and treatment of failing vital organ functions. The research field includes, among other areas, sepsis and organ dysfunction, respiratory failure and ventilator treatment, hemodynamic monitoring and circulatory failure, perioperative risk assessment and pharmacology, pain, as well as patient safety and clinical outcomes. The field is characterized by its close connection to everyday clinical practice and by methodological breadth, ranging from experimental studies to clinical trials and registry-based studies.

Your mission

Clinical research, development and education are central components of the department’s mission. The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Danderyd Hospital has several research supervisors and doctoral students, as well as a research unit under development. In recent years, both research and educational activities have developed in parallel with the expansion of clinical services. Sepsis research, an area of major clinical importance and with a clear link to the core mission of intensive care, is currently being developed and is conducted in collaboration between several units, placing high demands on academic leadership, coordination and methodological expertise.

The department is now recruiting a senior lecturer who will lead and further develop research at the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, particularly within sepsis research. The role also includes teaching in anesthesia and intensive care at Danderyd Hospital. The holder of the position will lead activities within the University Healthcare Unit for Anesthesia and Intensive Care and collaborate with other hospitals in the region.

The employment is divided 50 percent  at Karolinska Institutet and 50 percent at the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Danderyd Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific skills, very good pedagogical skills and clinical expertise.

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in  anesthesia and intensive care at the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Danderyd Hospital and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in  in anesthesia and intensive care as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Since the employment includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

In addition it is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills scientific skills  (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership and collaboration skills  (2), and clinical skills (2).
