We are seeking a Lecturer with expertise in creative arts, design, and research to join us in subtropical South-East China. The Institute of Creativity and Innovation (ICI) is a dual-degree institute established by Xiamen University (XMU) and the University for the Creative Arts (UCA). We are based on XMU’s Zhangzhou campus, which offers a picturesque, park-like setting with mountains on one side and Amoy Bay on the other. It’s a short journey to stunning beaches or the vibrant, multicultural city of Xiamen, the hub of South-East China.
We have multiple requirements, and these will be permanent contracts. UCA offers a competitive compensation package that includes:
Our department serves as a platform for environmental design, pioneering a distinctive approach to architectural and spatial design education. We prioritise active teaching and learning models that blend analogue techniques with digital media. Our modules are delivered through project-based and problem-based studio learning, focusing on Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Communication. We offer students a connected pedagogy throughout all our projects, engaging with external communities and organisations, and extending this approach to the broader design community.
As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, you will play a key role in the development and delivery of the BA(Hons) Environmental Design course at ICI, supporting students in studio-based learning through constructive and innovative teaching methods. You will also contribute to enhancing the scholarly profile of ICI by engaging with ICI’s creativity and innovation research portfolio, maintaining an active professional practice, or promoting creative education at ICI and beyond.
Your responsibilities will include planning, preparing learning content, and delivering modules and classes. You will teach across various modules with diverse learning objectives and design challenges for students. The role requires you to engage as a facilitator and collaborator in the students’ work and learning journey.
You will hold a master’s degree or higher in Architecture, Interior Design, Spatial Design, or a related field, with a minimum of two consecutive years in a teaching-focused role within a relevant design discipline at the higher education level. A doctoral research degree is particularly desirable for those applying for the Senior Lecturer position. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching in higher education in the UK, though individuals with experience elsewhere and a proactive attitude towards adapting to new educational frameworks are also encouraged to apply. A PGCert teaching degree and HEA fellowship is also desirable.
The role requires an individual who can demonstrate resilience and initiative when encountering challenges. Problem-solving skills are essential, along with a reflective and adaptable teaching approach. You will work actively within a multicultural and interdisciplinary team to help realise the course’s vision and direction. Fluency in English is essential.
We seek someone with the passion and drive to contribute to the successful establishment of the Institute and the ongoing development of its course portfolio in alignment with the needs of the growing Chinese creative industries.
If you would like an informal discussion about the role before applying, or any aspect of living and working in China, please contact Anna Baranowska via email (anna.baranowska@uca.ac.uk), providing your contact details.
