YOUR TASKS

  • At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation in line with one or more research lines of the Modern and Contemporary History research group (https://research.flw.ugent.be/nl/modern-and-contemporary-history).
  • You assist in the teaching activities of the History programme relating to the modern and contemporary periods. This particularly concerns practical courses such as ‘Historical Practice I’ and ‘Historical Practice II’, as well as support in the examination of lecture courses, such as ‘Economic History of the Modern and Contemporary Period’.
  • You provide support in the preparation and organization of the program’s project week, ‘Verleden Week.’
  • You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master’s degree in History or an equivalent qualification. The diploma requirement must be fulfilled by the date of appointment. For diplomas obtained outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence issued by NARIC must be provided.
  • You have achieved excellent academic results and wish to pursue a doctoral dissertation.
  • You have a strong interest in scientific research and teaching in modern and contemporary history.
  • You have experience with social science research methods and systematic empirical research in the field of modern and contemporary history.
  • You have an excellent command of Dutch and a very good command of English and French.
  • You possess strong didactic and communication skills. Teaching experience is considered an asset.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education.
  • Your appointment will start on 1 December 2026 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP3. More information about our salary scales.
