Scientific Collaborator in Climate Scenarios

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) at ETH Zurich and the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss together with further academic partners jointly develop climate scenarios for Switzerland.

Project background

The latest generation of Swiss climate scenarios “Climate CH2025” was published in late 2025. Scientific, technical, and quasi-operational extensions, together with ongoing maintenance, are currently being implemented as follow-up activities and will ultimately form the basis for the next generation of climate scenarios. Particular focus of this position will likely be on technical support in the distribution, maintenance and development of climate scenario products as well as on extremes and their governing processes. The position is based at MeteoSwiss.

Job description

  • Advancement of scientific methods to translate climate model projections into readily usable scenario products, e.g. in the field of extremes
  • Technical operationalization in the MeteoSwiss environment and support of developed methods
  • Analysis of results and their communication for different user groups
  • Support users with optimal usage and interpretation of scenario products

Profile

  • MSc in natural science or computational science and preferably a PhD in meteorology, climatology, environmental science, or a closely related field
  • Excellent programming skills in R and/or Python and a profound knowledge of state-of-the-art statistical methods for climate data analysis
  • Working experience with climate (model) data, in particular with large climate model ensembles, and experience in the analyses of climate extremes are considered as advantages
  • Open-minded, team-oriented, and goal-driven individual who enjoys maintaining close contacts with both the scientific community and with practitioners and end users of climate products
  • Good command of both German and English is required

We offer

  • The position is embedded in the team Climate Evolution of MeteoSwiss and involves close contact with collaborators at ETH Zurich and with practitioners
  • An engaging position in an innovative research field with a strong focus on applied aspects and user interaction
  • Start date as soon as possible
  • The position is limited to a period of 2 years
  • Main working place is at MeteoSwiss headquarters (Zurich Airport, easily accessible by public transport). Part-time home office possible.
