PhD Position in Polymer Synthesis

TLC group at ETH is looking for dedicated and hard-working synthetic chemists who would like to research on making new polymers. We synthesize macromolecules by new methods and try to control their nano-structures as well as to apply them to real-world applications. If you have strong organic chemistry background, and like to apply it to make macromolecules, we can provide you with some opportunity.

Project background

Our group is synthesis lovers. Our lab's interest and focus is heavily on synthesis. With the powerful tools of synthesis in hand, we can make molecules regardless of their sizes (either small organic molecules, polymers or nanoparticles) and play around with their structures, functionalities and properties.

Job description

  • New methods to prepare organic and polymer materials: Selective bond formations on both small and macromolecules will be studied. Catalysis and metal-mediated reactions are the main candidates. Tandem catalysis to rapidly build up the complex macromolecules is also one of the goals.Controlling their nano
  • structures by adopting state-of-art self-assembly techiques via taking advantage of living polymerization
  • Conjugated polymers for organic electronics: the key components of electronic devices. New materials will be applied to OTFT, organic memory and solar cell devices.

Profile

  • M.Sc. degree or equivalent in chemistry or related area and a strong background in synthetic chemistry
  • highly motivated and enthusiastic students who enjoy critical thinking and problem solving as well as taking on challenges.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English
  • Team player: who enjoys working in an open, diverse, and interdisciplinary team thereby forstering scientific discussion
