For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientist Powder Diffraction at beamline P02.1 & P25

Limited: 3 years | Starting date: 01.07.2025 | ID: FSMA015/2025 | Deadline: 29.05.2025 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

With the storage ring PETRA III and the Free-Electron-Laser FLASH, DESY offers a unique combination of photon sources to the scientific community. PETRA III, one of the most brilliant hard X‑ray facilities world wide, currently provides 23 undulator beamlines for experiments utilizing the extreme source brilliance. The new beamline P25 will be built for innovative industrially relevant applications and will also serve as a testbed for new technical developments towards PETRA IV. We are looking for a highly motivated experienced scientist to plan and develop a fully automated instrument for high-throughput powder diffraction at P25 including commissioning and user support in synergy with the powder diffraction team at beamline P02.1. This beamline is specialized for high energy X‑ray powder diffraction and PDF methods and works on in situ crystallization and variable temperature studies; operando studies of battery materials and catalysts; through to stress-strain measurements and simple high-throughput rapid access data collections under ambient conditions. The candidate should also contribute to our in-house research program by own research projects.

About your role:

  • Development and commissioning of the new fully automised powder diffraction end station at P25 in collaboration with scientists of the powder diffraction team at PETRA and engineers
  • User support at P25 and P02.1
  • Work as part of a team of scientists and engineers to provide operational support for powder diffraction and PDF experiments, in close collaboration with the international user community and industry
  • Develop and pursue your own in-house research program in the field of powder diffraction or total scattering

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work-life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

About you:

  • Completed academic higher education (master's or diploma) in physics, materials science, or a related field, or equivalent expertise, skills and experience
  • PhD in chemistry, physics, material science or equivalent field or qualification
  • Profound knowledge in beamline instrumentation and data collection at 3rd generation synchrotron beamlines
  • Experience in analysing data from either powder diffraction or total scattering experiments
  • Knowledge in the field of pharmacy, in situ catalytic or gas sorption studies and/or battery materials
  • Experience in user operation and design & construction of automated experiments
  • Basic knowledge of programming languages, preferably Python
  • Excellent team worker
  • Excellent communication skills in English
