The position is part of a hiring initiative that is a result of a successful application of the University of Cologne for the build-up of the Excellence Start-Up Center GATEWAY (ESC GATEWAY) at the University of Cologne. The initiative is funded by the Ministry of Economics, Innovation, Digitalization, and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The University of Cologne aims to foster entrepreneurial thinking and acting in outstanding research areas.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science aims to expand and strengthen its competence in the field of scientific machine learning, a currently rapidly developing field of research in which techniques of scientific computing and machine learning are combined and further developed. The advertised position should in particular cover the area of data-integrated/data-driven numerical simulation and build an interface between numerical mathematics and computer science. The development of methods and algorithms as well as their application to the solution of industrial problems in research, teaching, and technology transfer, in particular, the foundation of start-ups is desired. Ideally, the applicant should already have experience in this field, otherwise the potential for this should be described in detail in the application. It is desired that the candidate’s research and teaching relates to themes that are of relevance for start-ups or technology-transfer (whenever this is reasonable).
Possible, but not exclusive, research topics are machine learning-enhanced modeling and simulation, physics-informed machine learning, and model reduction with machine learning. Interdisciplinary applications in the context of technology transfer and especially start-ups, e.g., in medicine, natural or engineering sciences, as well as interactions with existing research topics in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science are desired. High-performance computing capacities are available at the Regional Computing Center Cologne (RRZK) of the University of Cologne.
The successful candidate is outstandingly qualified in the field of scientific machine learning with a focus on data-integrated/data-driven numerical simulation in research and teaching. The candidate should have extraordinary potential for the further development of the field of Entrepreneurship and Transfer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Experience in the successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding is an advantage.
The successful candidate represents applied mathematics in research and teaching and will be actively involved in the “Mathematics” and “Economathematics” bachelor and master programs of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as in the future master program "Data Science and Scientific Computing" - by providing classes in the intersection of numerical mathematics, computer science, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship /entrepreneurial culture. Active participation in the Center for Data and Simulation Science (CDS) of the University of Cologne is expected. The candidate is expected to become an active member of the ESC GATEWAY, creating a strong link between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and ESC GATEWAY. This includes active participation and support of planning and implementation of measures to promote entrepreneurship and start-ups at the University of Cologne. The successful candidate is expected to strongly engage within the concept “Data Science” agreed by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, to which the Divisions of Mathematics and Computer Science each contribute equally.
This includes an active participation in the planning and implementation of measures for the preparation of start-ups. Applicants are expected to show a strong commitment to the implementation of the "Data Science" concept adopted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, in which the Divisions of Mathematics and Computer Science are equally involved. Further responsibilities of the position include an active participation in the service activities of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science as well as to academic self-administration. The successful candidate will acquire a working knowledge of the German language sufficient for teaching and administration within the first two years of the appointment.
The recruitment requirements according to Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW) apply. As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine semester hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester). A candidate’s own prior transfer or entrepreneurial experience (e.g., own start-up experience, mentoring or coaching of a university start-up, transfer or entrepreneurship-related teaching/research experience in collaboration with the industry) is desirable and advantageous.
