Postdoctoral position in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics

Position Description

The Department of Engineering at the University of Perugia, Italy, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Exceptionally qualified PhD students can also be considered as pre-doc appointees.

In this role you will:

  • develop a new two-phase flow solver for fuel sprays with specific focus on high pressure and high temperature conditions, and multicomponent thermodynamics;
  • perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of two-phase flows using high-performance computing (HPC) tools;
  • use high-fidelity turbulence models to improve two-phase flow predictions;
  • incorporate state-of-the-art experimental measurements in improving the accuracy of two-phase flow models;
  • write conference and journal articles, and present the results of the work at international conferences and events.

The initial appointment will be for one to two years, with a possibility of renewal up to the third year, based on productivity and performance and the availability of funding. The position is within the area of CFD Modeling of Fuel Sprays and Combustion. The topic is related to the strong interest towards new combustion concepts and emission reduction. The successful candidate will collaborate with EU and extra-EU university partner groups. The work is expected to start in spring 2018.

Position Requirements

  • We are looking for an early stage researcher interested in numerical work with strong emphasis on OpenFOAM/LES/two-phase flows modeling.
  • Considerable knowledge of multi-dimensional code development (e.g. in C/C++) for two-phase flow applications, turbulence modeling, internal combustion engine theory and operation, and parallel scientific computing is required. Knowledge of other CFD tools are a plus, like CONVERGE or StarCCM++. Other programming skills, e.g. Matlab, are a very strong plus.
  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. in mechanical/aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, or related disciplines.
  • We appreciate cooperation skills, openness, problem solving skills and attitude towards critical thinking.
