The TU Wien is Austria‘s largest scientific-technical research and educational institution and one of the best technical universities in Europe with about 4500 employees in research, teaching and administration and over 30,000 students. At the Research Unit Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning (Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning, Institute of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture), a doctoral position (prae-doc/PhD) is available, start expected 01.01.2025 (36 hours per week, limited to 3 years).

European Partnership Driving Urban Transitions (DUT)

Co-creative Cohabitation Network (CoCoNet) proposes a novel approach to inner-city development fostering multi-functionality mindsets to achieve less car-dependency towards a spatially just, resilient and livable city. The unique approach of CoCoNet is to merge two integrated co-creative processes of (1) modeling and (2) planning and design with the aim to provide a methodology that allows to highlight spatial potentials revealing synergies between sustainable mobility, climate adaptation and biodiversity. Although digital models of the individual aspects are available, such an integrating, model-supported planning approach is currently missing in practice, but urgently needed for the development of future smart and sustainable urban neighborhoods. CoCoNet focuses on restructuring and redistributing urban streetscape at the district level and concentrates on combining mobility measures with NBS. The integrated co-creative processes will involve the city administration, local initiatives and urban design students. CoCoNet will go beyond current urban sustainability approaches by providing a planning methodology that can be directly applied in the creation of vibrant, sustainable urban neighborhoods giving valuable support to policy and decision makers. The project will also go beyond existing urban biodiversity studies by making socio-ecological aspects and the cohabitation between humans and other organisms a central point in the urban planning process.

Project duration: 3 years (expected start 01/2025)

We are looking for a project assistant (prae-doc) with an interest and expertise in linking the two focal points of climate change adaptation and co-creative planning processes to carry out the research project (36h).

Your tasks:

• Setting up, conducting and evaluating microclimate simulations for case studies in Vienna, Zurich, Munich and Erfurt (ENVI-met or similar) in close exchange with project partners and their expertises in modal shift / biodiversity
• Organization, moderation and documentation of the co-creative process (e.g. workshops, presentations) with the participating municipalities and the research team with a focus on Vienna and Zurich
• Conduct of the above-mentioned research project including knowledge transfer, active participation in subject-specific conferences, expansion of international networks to other universities, municipalities and the economy
• Publication work of the research activities (scientific publications, scripts, editing)

Your profile:

• Completed Master's degree in landscape planning, landscape architecture, spatial planning, urban planning or equivalent qualification
• High interest in the further development of explorative and integrated participation, design and planning methods for urban open spaces, natural and landscape areas
• Relevant experience with participation and moderation processes
• Relevant experience with microclimate simulation models (e.g. ENVI-met)
• Strong interest in research and explicit intention to write a dissertation/PhD
• Reliability, goal orientation and good time management: organizational talent and ability to work independently, analytically and in a structured manner as well as innovative ability and high initiative
• High social competence and very good communication skills: ability to work in a team, motivational skills, problem-solving skills
• Excellent language skills in German and English

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 3.220,20 /month gross, 14 times/year for 36 hours/week.
