Location:  SAMS, Oban

Contract Type:  Permanent

Working Pattern:  Full Time (37hrs per week)

Salary Range:  £44,263 - £61,198 per annum

Closing date: 8th November 2024

Introduction

The ocean is critical to life on our blue planet. Understanding how it is changing has never been more important.

In order to understand these changes, SAMS is expanding its science team and strengthening research in physical oceanography and marine biogeochemistry. Research in these areas is crucial to our understanding of climate change, weather patterns and marine ecosystems.

SAMS is a leading institute in climate-scale ocean research and recently hosted the Challenger Society Marine Science Conference. Situated on the west coast of Scotland, SAMS is located on the doorstep of the north-east Atlantic and is a leader in large-scale monitoring arrays and harnessing autonomous platforms.

New members of the team will help us chart the direction of our research, ensuring we can answer the most pressing questions in ocean science.

Come and join us!

The Role

SAMS is seeking to flexibly appoint two Principal Investigators in Physical Oceanography.

Both posts will provide a level of leadership within SAMS Physical Oceanography research team, generate world-leading research outputs, provide module leadership on SAMS Marine Science BSc course and/or other educational programmes, supervise SAMS/other students as well as line manage and coach early career researchers.

This post will focus on numerical and/or theoretical/dynamical advances in physical oceanographic climate-relevant processes (deep ocean and/or connectivity with adjacent shelf seas). SAMS has a particular interest in fundamental dynamical processes in high latitudes, in relation to the changing regimes in sub-polar, sub-arctic and arctic systems, though lack of experience in these geographies should not been seen as a barrier to applying.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a PhD in Physical Oceanography or other relevant discipline. You will have a strong background in mathematics and physics, with a focus on geophysical fluid dynamics. Excellent scientific writing skills are essential, to deliver international research proposals and high-impact journal publications.

You will have experience of leading research projects, managing staff/teams, students and budgets, and will have a track record of capturing research funding by writing successful proposals. Experience of supporting higher education activities such as teaching, supervising, and module leadership is also important.
