Young Investigator – Area of interest: ECOLOGY APPLIED TO MARICULTURE

2. – Description of the Institute, specific area of interest and funding source

The mission of the Instituto de Pesca is related to the responsibility of the use of living aquatic resources through the development of technology for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries, as well as the improvement of the quality of human life. Our infrastructure includes laboratories and experimental aquaculture ponds for trials. The division of Mariculture comprises two laboratories operating in Recirculation Aquaculture Systems. The infrastructure has capacity for five simultaneous trails with control of water quality.

We are looking for a passionate and dedicate Young Investigator interested in developing innovative research within the area of mariculture. The Young Investigator will carry out experimental studies addressing the evaluation of models for marine organisms cultivation in areas of environmental protection. The candidate must develop a project related to the proposed topic, assist in the orientation and co-orientation of students, collaborate with other researchers and assist in the writing and review of scientific works of the research group, as well as transferring technology and scientific knowledge.

The Project will be funded by São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP (www.fapesp.br/en), through its Young Investigator Award Program (http://fapesp.br/en/4479). The award will be provided as a Research Grant with the maximum duration of 48 months. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Young Investigator Fellowship in the amount of R$ 8.152,20 monthly free of Income Taxes. The peer reviewed Project of the selected Young Investigator may receive a Research Grant as described in: http://fapesp.br/en/4479.

3. – Position Summary and required experience:

3.1 Position Summary and expected research focus.

The research focus should evaluate: 1) different feeding management and its consequences for the maintenance of environmental quality; 2) the negative environmental impacts of marine finfish farming; 3) the biomitigation benefits of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture. Therefore, it is recommended that the Young Investigator has previous research experience on feeding practices for marine finfishes, flow of organic carbon and nutrient through trophic networks, and biofouling control techniques for tropical waters. The Young Investigator should domain instrumental analytical techniques such as stable isotope analysis and water quality measurement instruments (i.e. water probes and photometers). The Young Investigator should also domain the function and maintenance of Marine Recirculating Aquaculture System. Language skills: English, Spanish and/or Portuguese.

3.2 Your profile and required skills:

The candidates must demonstrate its scientific experience in the subject matter through publications within the last five years. It is essential that the candidate will be able to travel outside the city of his or her home for consecutive days or weeks at regular intervals throughout the duration of the scholarship, for the development of the field activities pertinent to the selected area.

The pre-selected candidates will be asked to submit a full research Project by March 31, 2019 and the final decision will be posted in www.pesca.sp.gov.br  by May 15, 2019.
