2 Postdoctoral Scientists in Earth System modelling

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research is seeking to fill two temporary positions in Earth System modelling:

2 Postdoctoral Scientists

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is a member of the Leibniz Association and addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts, and sustainable development. Researchers from the natural and social sciences work together to generate interdisciplinary insights and to provide society with sound information for decision-making.

1. One Postdoctoral Scientist position in:

Atmosphere dynamics (PIK ref. no. RDI/POEM-1) The task involves further validation and improvement of the innovative Aeolus atmosphere model developed at PIK, and advancing the integrated Earth System modelling of paleoclimate and the Anthropocene. For this position, the candidate should already have or be prepared to obtain an in-depth understanding of atmospheric dynamics.

2. One Postdoctoral Scientist position in:

Ocean circulation dynamics (PIK ref.no. RDI/POEM-2) The task involves modelling the global ocean circulation with focus on nonlinear thresholds, ice-ocean interaction and transient paleoclimate simulations. We use the MOM5 ocean circulation model of GFDL in Princeton – experience with this model is an advantage but not essential.

The scientists will be responsible for the quality of the atmosphere and ocean models within our integrated Earth System modelling team. They are expected to contribute substantially to model development as well as to lead scientific studies and the writing of publications.

Required are a doctorate and a proven track record in a relevant field, excellent skills in physics and scientific computing, fluent written and oral skills in the English language and willingness to travel.

The successful candidates will be based at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Potsdam, Germany, in Research Domain 1 “Earth System Analysis”.

Terms of employment

The positions are planned for 24 months with a salary according to the German public tariff scheme (100 % E13 TV-L) and include possible extension. It depends on the pending final approval of the funding. The envisaged starting date for the positions is 1 October 2017 or as per agreement.

PIK seeks to increase the number of women in those areas they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. Application of disabled applicants of equal scientific qualifications will be favorably regarded. PIK encourages applications by parents returning from parental leave.
