The Principal Scientist in Wildlife Ecology is part of the Cervid Research and Monitoring Team at the Natural Resources Institute of Finland (Luke), implementing and developing research activities in the research area. The position focuses on the study of interactions between wildlife species, in particular cervids, and their habitats at the landscape level - how habitats govern species occurrence and abundance, and the effects of species on their habitats and livelihoods in agricultural and forestry landscapes. The Principal Scientist’s mission is to produce high quality science and knowledge to support sustainable cervid population management as part of a diverse northern species community, deer-human conflict management and population monitoring. The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the strategic direction of basic and applied research in the research area, to acquire national and international research funding and to lead large-scale projects. The Principal Scientist is required to have a PhD in ecology or agricultural and forestry sciences. The position requires a proven track record of topically broad academic research and a high quality, peer-reviewed publication record in ecology, as well as methodological expertise in modern statistical and spatial data methods.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in population ecology research and population and habitat modelling. Knowledge of wildlife ecology, landscape ecology, boreal ecosystem functioning, agriculture and forestry and related disciplines, ecology and ecosystem effects of cervids, remote sensing and spatial data and their management, species monitoring and population assessment methods and wildlife management may be considered an asset.

The post requires excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written English, willingness and proven track record in scientific collaboration and academic leadership and mentoring, ability and proven track record in securing competitive domestic and international research funding, and the ability to collaborate and share information with stakeholders, including wildlife management, land management, hunting and wildlife organisations and the media. Successful performance in the position requires a wide international network of contacts and active domestic and international cooperation.

We expect the successful candidate to lead multidisciplinary research on the ecology and sustainable management of cervids and their habitats and the importance of the species group for boreal ecosystems and their economic exploitation in a changing climate, and to build a strong research portfolio around these topics and to promote the use of research results in diverse ways.
