Analysis of the p53/c-MYC network in cancer

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join our team at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. We are studying the role of p53 and c-MYC-regulated genes in the suppression of gastrointestinal and skin cancer. p53 is the most commonly mutated tumor suppressor gene and encodes a transcription factor that activates target genes, whereas c-MYC represents an oncogene and also encodes a transcription factor. Notably, p53 and c-MYC antagonistically regulate the same processes, such as tumor cell stemness, proliferation and invasion. In the past we have identified important mediators of their effects, such as the miR-34, 14-3-3sigma and AP4 genes. Currently, we are studying their in vivo relevance and function using conditional deletions of these genes in gastrointestinal tumor models. In addition, we are characterizing new p53 and c-MYC targets, such as lncRNAs and microRNAs. The results of our research may be used for prognostic and therapeutic approaches in the future.

Suitable candidates for the PhD positions should have a strong interest in cancer biology. The Ludwig-Maximilians-University offers a highly innovative research environment.
