The research group of Prof. Nicolai consists of a team of bright, dynamic and enthusiastic researchers that investigate processes and technology for improving quality and safety of horticultural products, with a strong bioscience engineering approach. One of our key expertises is advanced computer modeling and simulation using methods such as finite elements and computational fluid dynamics, applied to problems in the agrofood field for design and optimization of new techniques. We offer a stimulating work environment for those who are interested in scientific research on the verge of fundamental and applied research, with a high relevance to making a more sustainable world. KU Leuven is a world-class university and ranked 45 on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and ranks 1 on Reuters Most Innovative Universities in Europe.

Project

Spraying techniques play a crucial role in modern agriculture, ensuring that the correct amount of plant protection products reaches the target while maintaining crop health. However, varying crop and environmental conditions can lead to inefficiencies, with a significant portion of the spray failing to deposit properly, causing environmental losses and potential health risks. With increasing regulatory pressure to reduce pesticide use, there is now a greater demand for high-precision spraying techniques tailored to crop phenology and specific pest targets.

In this PhD position, you will tackle these challenges by developing and applying cutting-edge Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to optimize the spraying process. Your work will explore the complex interactions between spray behavior, 3D crop structures, and environmental factors, leading to more effective and sustainable spraying techniques. You will investigate both existing and innovative methods to enhance target deposition on a variety of crops while minimizing losses, thus balancing biological efficacy with environmental safety.

Through validation and real-world application, your model will directly benefit the agricultural sector by contributing to sustainable practices and a reliable food supply. As part of your research, you'll also develop a decision support system to assist farmers in evaluating the impact of their spray applications, ensuring healthier crops with minimized risks.

This PhD offers a unique opportunity to contribute to sustainable agriculture through innovative modeling and real-world impact. If you are passionate about agricultural technology and sustainability, we invite you to join us in shaping the future of crop protection.

Profile

You are very motivated PhD candidate who is eager to become part of a highly visible international interdisciplinary team to perform cutting-edge research. You have a critical mind and you have good affinity with advanced image analysis, computer modelling and simulation with computational fluid dynamics software. You are required to have a Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in (bioscience) engineering, physics or mathematics.

Offer

The lab offers you a 4 year PhD position. The lab will support you in all aspects in order to successfully obtain a PhD degree and a proper scientific training.
