The Department of Energy Technology focuses on research and teaching with the goal of contributing to sustainable energy systems. The department has four divisions with research areas with both technical and multidisciplinary character.

Research topics include turbomachinery, aeroelasticity, thermal energy storage, fuel cell technology, combustion of biomass, heat pump technology, heating and ventilation technology, indoor climate, heat transfer, energy and climate studies, market analyses and evaluation of sustainability, modeling of energy systems in buildings and city districts, and modeling of resource flows at national and regional levels.

Research traditions are based in mechanical engineering with links to chemistry, materials science, physics, regional planning, and economics.

The department’s personnel and students come from all over the world and contribute to an extremely international environment.

Job description

The Division of Energy and Climate Studies (ECS) works with research, education and policy in four thematic areas: bioenergy systems, energy for sustainable development, energy efficiency and urban sustainability. The research projects are usually related to two or more thematic areas and involve cooperation with academics, public sector and industry partners. Energy and climate policy relevance is aimed for in all projects. ECS was created in 2007 and reflects KTH's efforts to increase interdisciplinary research in energy in collaboration with several actors in society. (www.ecs.kth.se). 

We are looking for a doctoral student who will conduct research on the biobased circular economy focused on cities and having the city of Curitiba in Brazil as a starting point. The research will be carried out with the city of Curitiba and local universities with which KTH has established cooperation since a few years. Among other things, the project will examine the potential for energy and material recycling related to social and environmental activities in the city (ie urban food production and markets), and analyze both global and local incentives and gains while implementing changes for increased circular use of resources (ie reduced greenhouse gas emissions gases and improvement of the local environment). The doctoral student is funded by the project Biobased Circular Model for Sustainable Urban Economies - an agenda for local and global prosperity with a grant from FORMAS. 

ECS research is based on system thinking, and studies are conducted at global, regional and local level, as well as in the context of different countries. Energy and urban planning, environmental policy and method development and modeling of energy systems in the city are relevant areas. Spatial analysis methods are very interesting in the context of this position. (www.ecs.kth.se). 

The applicant is expected to contribute to ongoing projects at the ECS Division, as well as share research results in seminars, publish in academic journals, and assist in institutional work as stipulated for doctoral positions.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position as a doctoral student at ECS, the candidate needs a master in technology, engineering, energy economics, social sciences, planning or other relevant field. Previous research or experience in the topic of energy, urban planning and policy in transition countries is meritorious. Applicants should be motivated to work and develop in a multidisciplinary and international academic environment. Very good knowledge of written and spoken English is necessary. Good knowledge in Portuguese or Spanish is an advantage. 

Cross-disciplinary science is very important in ECS research. Therefore, we want the candidate to write a brief essay on how s/he thinks the connection of bioenergy within the city to contribute to a circular economy (max 1-2 A4 pages). Applications without this will be considered incomplete, and will therefore not be considered.

As a person, you are cooperative, with a good ability to work with other as well as independently. You are structured in your work, and focused and purposeful. Naturally, your interest for cross-disciplinary and transdisciplinary research is great, the reason why you are applying for this position. It is an advantage if you are creative and diligent.
