is issuing a call for applications for the following fixed-term position:

1 Research Functional Imaging Analyst for quantitative and neurofunctional imaging (Ref. IMA/18 TD)

ISMETT (Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e le Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione) is a state-of-the-art and one of the most technologically-advanced hospitals in Italy, managed by UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) in partnership with Civico Hospital and the Ri.MED Foundation. The Italian Ministry of Health acknowledged ISMETT as an Institute for scientific-based care and treatment (IRCCS) in the area of “End-stage organ failure treatment and research.”

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Radiology Services and the Principal Investigator of the project “Sistemi innovativi di precisione per la prevenzione e la gestione delle patologie correlate agli stili di vita - LifeStyle4Health” (F/050408/02/X32) funded by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development in compliance with the Horizon 2020 (PON I&C 2014-20) call for application, the Research Functional Imaging Analyst will be involved in the MRI computational processing in neuroradiology.

The selected candidate will undertake his/her activity in the scope of the project, both for outpatients and inpatients.

More specifically, the Research Functional Imaging Analyst will explore the functional neuroanatomy by applying computational techniques, with special focus on anatomical and functional cerebral connectivities, and cognitive repercussions related to their alterations. The Research Functional Imaging Analyst will work on the use of a multimodal approach to integrate neurophysiological and anatomical data resulting from different methods (e.g., magnetoencephalography, electroencephalography, functional MRI, and diffusion tensor imaging). In order to increase the knowledge of neurofunctional circuits and diseases related to their impairment, these techniques will be exploited to examine the activity of the brain at rest and after neurosensory stimulation.


All candidates are expected to possess the following requisites at the time of application:

  • Degree recognized in Italy or equivalent title in one or more of the following specialties: mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, information technology, information technology, physics, mathematics, statistics.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in one of the subject areas mentioned in the ‘Requisites’ above.
  • Scientific production rated with the H-index.

The ideal candidate has significant experience in computational neuroscience, ability to integrate multidisciplinary data (e.g., neuroimaging, neurocognitive, and behavioral evidences), and a thorough knowledge of biomedical imaging and neuro segmentation, in particular for MRI, and of quantitative and semi-quantitative data acquisition from mathematical models and signal processing, with reference to functional MRI, diffusion weighted imaging, diffusion tractography imaging, perfusion weighted imaging, and morphometric and volumetric analysis of brain anatomical structures (Voxel-Based morphometry).

The following skills are required: knowledge of high-level programming languages (e.g., C/C ++®, Matlab®, Python®, and R®), mastery of operating systems (e.g., Linux®, Microsoft Windows®, and MAC OSX®), thorough understanding of the principles of physics of MRI, and competence to program MRI pulse sequences. Also, experience in one of the following fields is requested: computational neuroanatomy and neuro segmentation, quantitative imaging, signal processing (with an inclination to use, or an already acquired knowledge of open-source neuroimaging software , such as SPM®, FSL®, or Freesurfer®). Good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Strong motivation, flexibility, stress management, problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills complete the role.
