Job description

Our interdisciplinary research group is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic doctoral researcher to conduct research on symptom development in a population with degenerative rotator cuff tears. The research is part of the research line “The aging shoulder,” in a collaboration between orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists. It concerns a doctoral track of 4 years.
Your research contributes to the knowledge of symptom development in an aging population with a degenerative rotator cuff tear. Patients with symptomatic tears, people with asymptomatic tears, and a control group will be the subject of investigation. Research methods will include biomechanical studies (quantitative US, EMG, shear wave elastography) and questionnaires regarding the psychosocial context and pain perception. You will be part of an interdisciplinary research team of orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists.
We offer you a full-time PhD scholarship for 4 years (coupled to a positive evaluation after the first year), starting 01/11/2024 the earliest.

Job profile

  • You have a strong interest in the biomechanical, psychosocial, and pain-related factors in shoulder pain, in particular the development of symptoms in people with degenerative rotator cuff tears
  • Be highly motivated to conduct scientific research
  • Be able to independently develop and execute a research project in terms of content
  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher in your master's thesis research
  • Knowledge of research methods (or willing to retrain in them) in the field of musculoskeletal research
  • Have good oral and writing skills, both in English and in Dutch
  • Be willing to participate in international conferences and publish internationally
  • Be willing to pursue a doctoral degree (including doctoral training)
