The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own re-search on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In the unit International Affairs of the BfR, the following position is to be filled with immediate effect for a limited period until December 31, 2027:

Project lead "International Capacity Building in Risk Assessment" (f/m/d)

Tasks:

The International Affairs Unit organizes the international activities of the BfR and works closely with multilateral, international, European and national institutions as well as with the responsible ministries and embassies. This call for application is part of a) a BMZ-funded BfR/BVL project to strengthen food safety and consumer health protection in Tunisia and b) an EFSA-funded project to establish sustainable training structures in Europe for risk assessors (including preparation of a European Master's program). Are you passionate about scientific risk assessment and teaching in an international context? Do you like to take on responsibility and enjoy helping to shape large projects? Then you can look forward to working in an intercultural and multidisciplinary team of 20 people and exciting tasks with national and international partners from science, teaching and public administration. 

In detail, the activities include

  • Continuation and completion of project measures in the field of "Structural and technical expansion of risk assessment structures in Tunisia" (including working group management, teaching, cooperation with short-term experts and advice for decision-makers)
  • Conception, technical support and practical implementation of international training programs and conferences
  • Creation of teaching modules and training materials, partly in consultation with scientists and educational specialists
  • Collaboration in the project management team for the expansion of training structures in Europe (risk assessment) (including project marketing, negotiation management and acquisition of third-party funding)
  • Activity as lecturer, academic mentor and moderator
  • Collaboration on reports, project applications and public relations work (e.g. processing press inquiries, preparing, carrying out and writing publications, speeches, greetings)

Requirements:

  • Completed university degree in natural sciences (Master's degree, diploma or comparable university degree), e.g. in veterinary medicine, agricultural sciences, biology, nutrition and food sciences or a comparable area 
  • Doctoral degree or PhD
  • Relevant professional experience in the assessment of health risks from food, chemical substances and consumer products
  • Relevant professional experience in university teaching and/or adult education
  • Very good knowledge in the field of European food safety
  • Business fluent in English and French (comparable to level C1 GeR)
  • Above-average organizational skills and experience in project and quality management
  • Strong strategic, analytical and conceptual skills, very good expression and presentation skills as well as representation skills
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, teamwork and problem-solving skills
  • Above-average commitment, sense of responsibility, ability to cooperate and persuasiveness
  • Willingness to travel for up to several weeks at a time nationally and international is a prerequisite

Desired:

  • Knowledge of the German language
  • Further education and training in didactics and communication, as well as experience in the creation and implementation of training concepts
