PhD Position in Dissolution of Mg-based Silicate Minerals for Carbon Sequestration

We are looking for a motivated PhD student to work on the Dissolution of Mg-based Silicate Minerals for Carbon Sequestration.

Project background

We are offering a fully funded position for a motivated and passionate PhD student to join the Durability of Engineering Materials research group at ETH Zurich. The group, led by Prof Ueli Angst, addresses research challenges spanning from durability of engineered materials and structures in civil engineering and infrastructures in the energy sector to carbon dioxide sequestration. We use experimental and computational methods covering corrosion science, materials science, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, porous media and reactive mass transport.

The position is expected to start early 2025 and is fully funded for 4 years.

Job description

With growing concern over elevated levels of greenhouse gases there is an urgent need to develop effective solutions for their removal from the atmosphere. This project offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the dissolution and carbonation behavior of Mg-based silicate minerals. Using novel electrochemical methodologies and state-of-the-art material characterization techniques at the host institute, the candidate will develop a fundamental understanding of the reactivity and dissolution of Mg-based silicate minerals. The student will be part of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in electrochemistry, thermodynamic modeling, and materials science, receiving strong support throughout the project. This role provides a unique opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research at the crossroads of electrochemistry and materials science, with the potential to make significant contributions to both academic advancements and real-world environmental impact, particularly in the field of carbon sequestration.

Profile

Profile of successful applicants:

  • Master’s degree in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, mineralogy or geochemistry
  • Experience with characterization techniques is recommended. Prior experience in electrochemistry, mineral dissolution, and carbon sequestration are beneficial, but not needed. However, candidates are expected to show a strong interest in these fields.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Maturity and great motivation to learn and work independently
  • Above all, candidates should be curious and enthusiastic in what they do
