The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the department in the acquisition and coordination of essential R&D projects for the compatibility and expansion of testing routines for the qualification of metallic materials and components in the field of hydrogen technologies, including issues related to the conversion of existing LNG tank systems
  • Administrative support in projects and project staff as well as coordination of testing campaigns of metallic materials
  • Coordination and bundling of expertise as well as addressing of questions regarding material compatibility with hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia
  • Coordination of MatCom in H2Safety (here MatCom1 – metallic materials)
  • Publication in national and international peer-reviewed journals and presentation at national and international conferences
  • Participation in relevant national and international standardisation committees for transferring the findings and establishing a scientifically sound normative basis for the conversion of tank systems
  • Participation in the field of failure analysis of welded metallic components in relation to new hydrogen technologies

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master/Diploma) in the field of mechanical engineering, materials science, physical engineering or comparable with a very good, completed doctorate (PhD)
  • In-depth knowledge in the field of stress corrosion cracking of metallic materials and their welded joints in ammonia
  • Knowledge in the field of corrosion and corrosion protection
  • Experience in the development and expansion of new research areas and creative experimental techniques
  • The position requires a high level of expertise in at least two of the above-mentioned fields and the ability to lead scientific teams
  • In-depth knowledge in the field of welding technology is desirable
  • Experience in the acquisition and management of R&D projects and corresponding scientific project management
  • Experience in the supervision of junior researchers
  • Proven publication record in the relevant field of research
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in German and English
  • Good communication and information behavior, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/willingness and ability to get involved, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking ability
