PhD-student: Next Generation Solar Cells with Singlet Fission

Conventional solar cells cannot use a large part of the high-energy (blue) end of the spectrum. The high-energy photons are absorbed, but much of their energy is lost as heat.

In this project you will use an organic semiconductor that catches the high-energy light before it reaches the underlying solar cell. It then splits the energy into two particles, doubling the current that the solar cell can produce per high-energy photon. This process, called singlet fission, already works with high efficiency. The aim of this project is to combine it with existing solar cells to enhance their efficiency.

The project focuses mostly on experimental measurements of energy and charge transfer at the hybrid interface, but can also contain modelling to improve our theoretical understanding. You will perform optical and electrical measurements on the interface, and on full solar cells. The measurements are in the bulk and on the nanoscale.

About the group

The Hybrid Solar Cell Group focuses on radically new paths towards much more efficient solar cells, using both organic and inorganic materials. We aim at combining the unique properties and the richness of organic materials with the highly efficient, well-characterised inorganic materials.

We provide a highly collaborative environment with a focus on scientific excellence, both within the group and with our national and international collaborators.


We seek candidates with a very strong background in physics, chemistry, material science, or engineering with an interest in solar cells. PhD candidates must meet the requirements for an MSc degree. We offer a fully funded PhD position for four years.

Terms of employment

You will be offered an employment of four years in the service of NWO-I with excellent employment benefits. The position is intended as full-time (40 hours / week, 12 months / year). After successful completion of your PhD research a PhD degree will be granted at one of the Universities in the Netherlands.
