The research group led by Prof. Dr. Ann Smeets (Surgical Oncology, Department of Oncology, KU Leuven) is seeking a doctoral candidate to strengthen the research team. The research group focuses on addressing new research questions within clinical and translational projects related to breast cancer research. The emphasis is on improving (surgical) treatment for breast cancer, enhancing care for patients with or at high risk of breast cancer, investigating and implementing lifestyle interventions in cancer, as well as more translational projects such as validating predictive biomarkers for immunotherapy and developing an implant after breast-conserving surgery. The research group is also involved in several clinical studies, both as a sponsor and participating center. Additionally, the research group is part of the university hospital Leuven and collaborates closely with other research groups within KU Leuven, as well as with numerous (inter)national research partners.

Project

This vacancy is part of the research line focusing on the implementation of lifestyle interventions in (breast) cancer. The aim of this project is to provide scientifically accurate information about lifestyle and complementary therapies to (former) cancer patients via an online platform. The diagnosis and treatment of cancer have significant consequences for patients. A healthy lifestyle can not only improve the quality of life but also have a significant impact on survival. Furthermore, there is scientific evidence that certain complementary therapies can help alleviate therapy side effects. During consultations, there is often insufficient time, manpower, and/or knowledge to delve deeper into lifestyle. Knowledge about complementary therapies is generally limited among traditionally trained healthcare providers. This often results in patients embarking on their own search, which is both challenging and increases the risk of misinformation. The added value of the platform is therefore to provide this information correctly and thus achieve a more holistic approach to patient care.
Job requirements:
• Collect, evaluate, and interpret scientific literature
• Investigate currently available screening tools
• Write scientific information at the level of patients/laypeople
• Design and develop a website to host the platform in close collaboration with a web designer
• Ensure the implementation of the platform in clinical practice
• Responsible for the day-to-day project management
• Report to the rest of the research group and participate in team meetings
• Seek out experts within a specific topic and regularly consult with them
• Apply for additional funding
• Assist in other research projects within the research group

Profile

The ideal candidate ideally has a Master's degree in (Bio)medical Sciences, Pharmacy, or Bioengineering, or another scientific discipline with a strong interest in oncology and lifestyle.
• Experience with scientific literature research and interpretation
• Interest in and understanding of integrative oncology and complementary therapies
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• Critical thinking and commitment to quality
• Ability to establish connections between data
• Comfortable with patient interaction
• Social and enjoys working in a team, but can also work independently
• Able to establish contacts with other researchers and staff easily and quickly
• Willingness to be flexible
• Excellent planning and organizational skills
• Proficient in both Dutch and English

Offer

We offer a PhD position in a challenging and multidisciplinary research environment with opportunities for personal and professional development. Also, the chance to contribute to improving the quality of life for patients with (breast) cancer.
